Resistance to development of larvae of the apple maggot in crab apples

Resistance to development of larvae of the apple maggot in crab apples

Journal of Economic Entomology 70(5): 611-614

Crab apples of the varieties Almey, Malus sikkimensis. M. toringoides, Dupont Flowering, Henrietta Crosby and Morden 455 were found in laboratory studies in Nova Scotia in 1973-74 to be resistant to the development of larvae of Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh). Resistance was correlated with total phenol content, but bioassays with an artificial diet suggested that there were also qualitative differences between susceptible and resistant varieties.
