Resistance to innovation and economic dependence in Northeast Brazil

The objective of this paper is to analyze some effects of economic dependence between sharecroppers and landlords on technological progress in North-East Brazil. The two elements of resistance to progress: (1) the risk aversion and financial weakness of the sharecroppers; and (2) the landlord's interest in maintaining the status quo, are explained by means of a mathematical model.
