Lodging in the field and resistance to stalk bending and breakage in laboratory tests were studied in five varieties grown at various densities during the period 1966-72. The results of the laboratory tests could be expressed numerically, but no exact values could be assigned, above or below which lodging would or would not occur. Differences due to variety as well as to density and year were observed.
