From studies with Avoncrisp, Avondefiance, some of their ancestor lines and a number of other lines, it is concluded that (1) the gene which conditions resistance to Bremia lactucae race W3 may be the nuclear component associated with resistance to P. bursarius; and (2) resistance to P. bursarius in Imperial 45634M, and in its derivatives Avoncrisp and Avondefiance, may come from a Russian line of Lactuca serriola which also has resistance to B. lactucae, and from Iceberg which does not.
