Resistance to yellow berry in relation to protein synthesis in grains and the nitrate reductase activity in leaves of Triticum durum

In 7 Italian durum wheat cultivars with varying resistance to yellow berry, in vivo nitrate reductase activity and soluble protein content were measured in the flag leaf from booting until senescence. Grain N content was measured from 6 days after flowering until maturity. Leaf nitrate reductase activity and grain protein contents were higher in yellow-berry resistant cultivars. The highest grain yields were given by Valsacco which yielded 408 g/m2 with 40 kg N/ha and 550 g with 120 kg N.
