A common feature of all fruits with the climacteric pattern is the production of ethylene and the response to exogenous ethylene, though the stimulation of respiration by ethylene is not limited to climacteric fruits. In fact, ethylene accelerates the rates of glycolysis and respiration in plant parts in which ripening is not involved.
