Respiration and the generation of rhythmic outputs in insects

In the first part of this review on respiration and the generation of rhythmic outputs in insects, which was presented at a symposium entitled Neural Control of Respiration that was held at the State University of New York at Albany on 13 August 1974, neural mechanisms controlling insect respiratory movements are considered, with special reference to Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.), and, in the second part, the general properties of neural mechanisms producing rhythmic movements are dealt with, and the results of studies on ventilation are compared with those of studies on other rhythmic movements.
