Measurements of O2 uptake and CO2 evolution during fungal attack can be used to determine the rate and extent of decay and subsequently the efficacy of wood preservatives. Toxic thresholds can be determined on 3/4 in cubes after 3-4 weeks' incubation, compared with 12 weeks based on wt. loss measurements. The automated gas-chromatographic technique provided greatest flexibility in use combined with high sensitivity and low maintenance requirement.
