Respiration of a perennial ryegrass crop

Using a crop enclosure apparatus, sward photosynthesis was measured in the field at intervals during crop growth, and dark respiration was then measured during the following 48 h. A steady rate of dark respiration was maintained during the first 12 h of darkness, followed by a decline to a lower rate which reached a steady value at 40 h; the 2 levels were ascribed to growth plus maintenance and to maintenance, respectively.
