Respiration of hydrogenosomes of Tritrichomonas foetus. I. ADP-dependent oxidation of malate and pyruvate

Respiration of hydrogenosomes of Tritrichomonas foetus. I. ADP-dependent oxidation of malate and pyruvate

Journal of Biological Chemistry 253(4): 1207-1214

Hydrogenosomes of Tritrichomonas foetus can use molecular oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor. The terminal oxidase is insensitive to cyanide and torenone. Respiration of the particles is supported only by NADH, alpha -glycerophosphate, pyruvate, and by malate in combination with NAD. Synthesis of ATP is unaffected by oligomycin or 2,4-dinitrophenol but strongly inhibited by arsenate. Apparently, only substrate level phosphorylation occurs in hydrogenosomes.
