In experiments with Dutch Black Pied cows on the 'Detskosel'skii' state farm in Leningrad region, the characteristics stated in the title were studied (i) with 2 groups of 10 cows in the 2nd-4th lactation months and with mean previous lactation yields of approx. 4200 and 5200 kg respectively; (ii) with groups of 5 cows, daughters of 4 different bulls (mean lactation yields 4400-5700 kg); and (iii) 2 groups of 8 cows (mean initial daily milk yield, approx. 21 and 19 kg respectively) of which the 2nd received supplements of trace elements and vitamin D2 to the common ration. It is concluded from results tabulated for (i)-(iii) that energy expenditure/unit milk production decreases with increase in milk yield; that cows of different genotypes differ markedly in energy utilization for milk production; and that increase in nutritive value of the ration is reflected in increase in efficiency of energy utilization for milk production.
