From a study of two groups of wheat lines, one consisting of three isogenic lines of Thatcher and the other of three different varieties, showing, respectively, in each group, immune, resistant and susceptible reactions to infection by P. recondita f. sp. tritici race 77, it is shown that (1) in immune lines respiration, photosynthesis and the contents of chlorophyll a and b and of carotenoids remains unaltered following inoculation, (2) respiration increases sharply until fungal sporulation in both resistant and susceptible lines, and (3) the decline in photosynthesis in the resistant lines is directly related to that of chlorophyll content while in the susceptible lines it is greater than the decline in chlorophyll content.
