Respiratory metabolism of the semen of the honey-bee, Apis mellifera

The mean respiratory quotient averaged 0.64, suggesting that phospholipids constitute the major source of energy. Dilution of semen increased the rate of oxygen consumption by 68%. Semen stored at 13-14 deg C for 1 month showed only 40% of the oxygen uptake of freshly ejaculated semen. Samples of semen treated with streptomycin sulphate showed significantly lower rates of oxygen consumption than untreated samples.
