Response of an early-maturing corn hybrid to planting date and population in the northern Plains

In field trials in 1971-2, plant DM and grain yield and ear moisture content of maize hybrid Trojan TX grown at plant populations of 20 000, 30 000, 40 000 or 60 000 plants/ha averaged 5.2 and 2.1 t/ha and 27%, respectively, with sowing in mid-May, 5.1 and 1.9 t/ha and 33% with sowing in mid-June and 5.3 and 1.5 t/ha and 54% with sowing in late June. Highest yields were obtained with about 30 000 plants/ha irrespective of sowing date.
