Response of different sugar beet varieties to thinning time

In field trials in Iraq in 1971-3, 12 sugar beet cultivars were thinned when plants had (a) 1, (b) 2 or (c) 3 pairs of leaves. Root sucrose content, root diam., root:top ratio and yields of roots and tops were measured at harvest. In 1971-2 cultivar differences were found for all measured characteristics except top yield and root diam., and the highest sugar yield (258 kg/donum) was obtained by Poly-Kuhn.
