Red kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) cvs. Charlevoix, Manitou and Mecosta were significantly more tolerant of alachlor at 2.5 and 4 lb/acre pre-em. than were navy beans (P. vulgaris) cvs. Sanilac, Gratiot and Seafarer when tested on sandy loam soil. Alachlor incorporated at 3 lb pre-sowing followed by 2.5 lb pre-em. gave excellent control of annual grasses and Solanum nigrum, while a mixture of alachlor + chlorpropham pre-em. also controlled grasses and broad-leaved weeds.
