Swards of perennial ryegrass S23, Italian ryegrass RvP, cocksfoot S37, timothy S352, tall fescue S170 and Poa trivialis were (a) left unirrigated, (b) given 25 mm water whenever the potential soil water deficit was 25mm, or (c) partly returned to field capacity after cutting. The swards were given 400 kg N/ha during the year and were cut every 3 or 6 weeks from 6 or 27 May respectively.
