Response of high yielding rice varieties to levels of nitrogen

In field trials in the wet seasons of 1971-2 and 1972-3, 7 rice were given 0, 50, 100, 150 or 200 kg N/ha. In both yr av. paddy yield increased with increasing N levels from 2.13 t/ha with no N to 4.49 t/ha at 150 kg N/ha. Lower levels of N application gave higher yield response/kg applied N. Calculated opt. rate of N application for Jaya, Vijaya, IR20, IET-1039, IR8, IR22 and IET-1991 was 123, 126, 114, 117, 127, 130 and 124 kg N/ha resp.
