Response of pinto bean to simultaneous exposure to ozone and PAN

10-day-old Phaseolus vulgaris plants in growth chambers were exposed for 4 h to either 0.3 p.p.m. O3, 0.05 p.p.m. peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN) or the 2 pollutants combined at these conc. Plants developed adaxial fleck on exposure to O3 and abaxial bronzing on the 1st trifoliate leaf. Plant response to the combined pollutants was either additive or synergistic on the adaxial leaf surface and antagonistic on the abaxial leaf surface.
