In trials in 1971-3 under dryland conditions in E. Uttar Pradesh, increasing the rate of applied N from nil to 90 kg/ha increased average grain yields from 1.09 to 2.61 t/ha in wheat, from 1.33 to 3.7 t/ha in barley and from 1.12 to 2.42 t/ha in oats.
