Response of rice plant to defoliation treatments at different developmental stages

All or 50% of the total leaves were removed from rice plants on 4 dates at 5-day intervals beginning (a) 70 days after sowing or (b) after 10% flowering. The reduction in paddy yield was 1.3-35.3% with partial defoliation and 4.4-56.4% with complete defoliation at (a) and 0.8-39.8% and 4.2-58.4%, resp. at (b); the yield reductions increased with delay in defoliation at (a) and decreased with delay in defoliation at (b).
