In field trials in 1975, winter wheat (a) Cappelle-Desprez, (b) Maris Huntsman and (c) Maris Fundin were grown at 8 N levels (0-210 kg/ha). Leaf area increased as N rate increased. Grain yield was increased only by rates up to 150 kg N; there was no difference between at 0 or 30 kg N, but at >30 kg N yields of (b) and (c) were higher than (a). Straw yield and shoot dry wt. after anthesis in (a) and (b) was greater than in (c).
