Response of three varieties of winter wheat to nitrogen

Response of three varieties of winter wheat to nitrogen

Rothamsted Experimental Station: UK, Rothamsted Experimental Station: Report for 1976 Part 1: 34-36

In field trials in 1975-6, winter wheat (a) Cappelle-Desprez, (b) Maris Huntsman and (c) Maris Hobbit were given 8 N rates ranging from 0 to 210 kg/ha applied on 6 May. Due to drought, ear number (av. 350/m2, 1.1/plant) was unaffected by N; max. LAI was <4 and grain growth period was 33 days. Mean yields were (a) 3.9, (b) 4.3 and (c) 4.7 t/ha. N increased the number of fertile spikelets/ear.
