Results on long-term storage and consumption of lye-treated straw

Tierzucht 28(8): 365-366

In trials in 1973-4, NaOH-treated straw of winter wheat was stored under airtight conditions or silage-like conditions with sugar beet leaves in Oct. 1973. Feeding of cattle started in Dec. and finished in Mar. with no ill-effects. DM digestibility was increased from 40% in untreated to 59% in NaOH-treated straw.
