A survey in southern Africa revealed 31 new plant species whose leaf protoplasm survived air drying. Among the angiosperms which were tolerant of desiccation were the grasses Brachyachne, Eragrostis, Micraira, Microchloa, Oropetum, Sporobolus and Tripogon spp. The leaf water potentials of the various plant species ranged from 7 to 70% r.h. during the dry season. Plants tolerant of desiccation fell broadly into 2 categories of response to drying.
