Serum iron and iron binding capacity after total dose infusion of iron-dextran for iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy

Serum iron and iron binding capacity after total dose infusion of iron-dextran for iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the British Commonwealth 81(11): 895-900

At different stages of pregnancy 22 women with iron-deficiency anaemia were given a total-dose infusion of iron-dextran, Imferon. Serum Fe ranged from 10 to 58 mu g/100 ml before infusion and from 30 000 to 72 000 mu g/100 ml after infusion, depending on the dose given. Fe disappeared from the serum exponentially after infusion, the half-life ranging from 37 to 46 h; falling to normal values by 21 days.
