Significance of body weight of 3-week old rats in protein efficiency ratio (PER) measurements

The bodyweight at 21 days old of male Sprague-Dawley rats were 42 to 56 g and those of Sprague-Dawley derived rats were 56 to 68 g. There was no significant difference in 28-day protein efficiency ratio (PER) of casein within breed groups whose weights were within that range. Weight variation induced by altering litter size after birth had a significant effect.
