Seven growth increments from a 500-year-old tree of Pseudotsuga menziesii and specimens from eight other North American conifers were separated into early and late wood. The length of individual tracheids and the weight of their carbohydrate skeletons were determined. For the same tracheid length, early and late wood gave similar amounts of alpha -cellulose but slightly differing amounts of hemicelluloses.
