Sources, rates and frequencies of N application in subirrigated hay meadows

Agronomy Journal 69(4): 644-647

Sources, rates and frequencies of N application in subirrigated hay meadows

Urea, S-coated urea (SCU) or ammonium nitrate (AN) was broadcast in spring on subirrigated meadows, containing a complete mixture of Agropyron, Poa, Sorghastrum and Carex spp. at annual rates of 0, 34, 67 or 135 kg N/ha in 1971, 1972 and 1973. All rates of N increased hay and protein yields and no differences between sources were found with 34 or 67 kg N/ha. At the higher rates AN and SCU gave higher hay yields than did urea. Recovery of N was greater from SCU than from AN or urea.
