The parthenocarpic gherkin cvs Iwa and Skierniewicki were grown in compost above a substrate of (1) fresh FYM, (2) bales of rye straw, (3) a layer of loose rye straw, or (4) a layer of mill waste to provide bottom heat. The straw and mill waste were fertilized with N, P and K.
