Abstract
A combination of intracystic body staining and cyst wall staining is required to confirm the diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in lung smears from rats and humans. Giemsa and Toluidine blue-O are recommended for these 2 staining purposes, respectively. A combination of HE stain and Toluidine blue-O stain is recommended to show the host reaction and the parasite cyst wall, respectively, in lung sections.
