Studies on barley breeding based on hybridization between two-rowed and six-rowed varieties. I. Effect of the genes controlling number of rows on agronomic characters

The influence of the genes VV (two-rowed) and vv (six-rowed) on 13 important agronomic characters was studied using 68 paired isolines which were developed by selfing Vv heterozygotes derived from crosses between the two-rowed varieties Kirin Choku 1 and Tochigi Golden Melon and three six-rowed Japanese varieties.Two pairs of isolines, developed in 1962 by back crossing with either of the parental varieties Compana and Vantage as recurrent parents were also employed in a separate experiment.
