Studies on the development of whole-crop feed. 1. Quality and nutritive value of whole-crop silages made from oats, wheat and barley

Studies on the development of whole-crop feed. 1. Quality and nutritive value of whole-crop silages made from oats, wheat and barley

Reserach Bulletin of the Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment Station (113): 159-187

In 3 oat cultivars, total fodder and grain yield were higher in a late-maturing than in an early-maturing cultivar and the proportion of yield made up by grain was similar in all cultivars. In vitro digestibility was highest at the vegetative stage and digestibility of stems decreased markedly between milk and late-meal ripeness stages. A high cell wall content in grain led to low digestibility.
