Studies on the improvement of storage ability in head vegetables. I. The relationship between cultivar, stage of maturity and fertilizers and the storage ability of lettuce and cabbage

Bulletin of the Vegetable and Ornamental Crops Research Station, A Ishinden Ogoso, Tsu 4: 77-88

The storage life of lettuces depended chiefly on the and the stage of maturity at harvest. Great Lakes 366, the that kept best, maintained good quality for twice as long as New York, the most perishable of the 5 cvs examined. Heads cut at a late stage of maturity deteriorated quickly. There was little effect of fertilizer but high P and organic fertilizers slightly prolonged storage life while high N shortened it.
