Studies on the inheritance of various characters in apple. II. Inheritance of fruit colour

Bulletin of the Fruit Tree Research Station, C Kaju Shikenjo Hokoku, C (4): 1-11

In a study started in 1939 at Fujisaki, Aomari Prefecture, using 18 varieties, and in 1959 at Morioka, using 50 varieties and hybrids, red skin was dominant over yellow. Jonathan, Ralls and Worcester Pearmain were homozygous for red skin, and Delicious, Starking Delicious and Redgold were heterozygous. A two-generation study of the cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious suggested that a single dominant gene produces red skin.
