In tobacco, Mn deficiency in which leaves contained 25 p.p.m. Mn compared with 106 p.p.m. in normal leaves, led to a decrease in yield; leaves were shorter and thicker and had higher carotenoid contents and lower contents of chlorophyll, reducing substances, reducing sugars, polyphenols, total N, proteins, water-soluble N, amino acids and total alkaloids than normal plants.
