In field trials in 1973-4, a cocksfoot sward sown at 900 plants/m2 had fewer tillers/plant at the 1st cut than a sward containing 100 plants/m2, and contained only vegetative tillers, whereas the sparsely-populated sward had both vegetative and reproductive tillers. The tiller composition of the yield from the 2nd and 3rd cuts was the same as in the 1st.
