Synchronisation of oestrus in beef heifers using a combined progesterone and prostaglandin (PG) treatment

19 heifers in the follicular and luteal stages of the oestrous cycle were each given 2 intramuscular injections of 50 mg progesterone 48 h apart. These animals, and a control group of 5 heifers in the follicular stage and 3 in the luteal stage, were given a single intramuscular injection of PG 48 h after the treated group had received the 2nd injection of progesterone. In the progesterone-treated group, 10 follicular and 8 luteal heifers did not show oestrus until after the PG injection.
