The 4 ration types described in the preceding abstr. were fed to the same 4 groups of cows throughout 1st lactation, with the following modifications: the composition of the pelleted complete feed was slightly changed because of poor intake; untreated straw pellets were fed to groups (i) and (iii) for a 4-wk period, with treated straw pellets during the remainder of lactation; and group (iv) received green maize in summer.
