Early work carried out by de Candolle and Darwin on the origin of cultivated plants is briefly outlined. In the first half of this century, Vavilov's studies on the origin of cultivated plants are of significance; he called attention to the need for biochemical studies. However, it is recognized that Vavilov's methods of determining centres of origin and the centres themselves are oversimplifications.
