The effect of different mains waters on the vase life of cut flowers

In a trial using cut flowers of the rose Sonia hard water used by the grower (before marketing) and during the vase life resulted in a much better quality grading of the cut flower head than other types of water. Soft water with a high salt content was better than soft and sweet (i.e. non-saline) water. By changing from hard or saline water on the holding to sweet water in the vase, some of the advantages of the hard or saline water were lost.
