The effect of dust and of transportation along unpaved roads on satsumas

The effect of dust and of transportation along unpaved roads on satsumas

Bulletin of the Kanagawa Horticultural Experiment Station (22): 13-19

Deposits of dust on trees near dirt roads delayed greening of new foliage and suppressed new shoot formation and elongation, thus reducing tree vigour. Fruit developed poorly, matured more slowly, and suffered more storage decay and loss of sugars and acid from the juice. The use of a windbreak reduced dust deposition and improved tree vigour and the size and taste of the fruit.
