The effect of endogenous and exogenous nitrogen upon the early seedling growth of barley cultivars

Seedlings were studied which had either a low or a high endogenous nitrogen content. In high-N grains, the superiority in nitrogen occurred solely in the endosperm and mostly in the hordein fraction. These grains had faster germination and seedlings from them had more rapid dry-matter accumulation and a higher rate of photosynthesis. They had greater amounts of total and fraction-1 protein in the first leaf lamina and the weight of the aerial parts was greater than that of the roots by day 6.
