In a three-year experiment on onions grown in monoculture for 8-10 years or in a rotation in which they were preceded by egg-plants, the number of micro-organisms in the onion rhizosphere was maximal while the bulb was growing and was greatest near the roots. In monoculture (as compared with rotational cropping) the numbers of bacteria and actinomycetes and of micro-organisms decomposing organic and mineral N and P decreased, particularly near the roots and in the rhizosphere.
