The effect of nitrogen application on Italian ryegrass grown as a reclamation crop on heavy saline desert soil at Hofuf - Saudi Arabia

N at 15-120 kg/ha month was applied to Italian ryegrass Tetila sown at 50 kg/ha on virgin desert soil in Oct. 1973 leached 12 times with about 10 cm water at each application. DM yield increased significantly with increasing N application but there was no significant difference between yields where rates above 60 kg N/ ha month were used; at 60 kg N/ha the yield was 12.5 t DM/ha in 216 days, compared with 2.9 t DM/ha in the unfertilized control.
