The effect of soil moisture content and gibberellin seed treatment on seedling emergence in direct sown culture of paddy rice on upland fields

Paddy rice was sown at 3 or 7 cm depth in upland fields. When soil m.c. was <15% (dry basis), seed did not germinate and at 15-20% m.c. germination was delayed. When m.c. was 20-37%, rates of seedling elongation and emergence increased with increasing soil m.c., and percentage emergence at 10th and 16th day with 3 and 7 cm depth sowing, resp. was similar. At 48% m.c., elongation rate decreased and emergence was reduced with deep sowing; at 64% m.c., only the coleoptile elongated.
