The effects of milk feeding on the pre- and post-weaning growth of calves, and on stomach development at weaning

The effects of milk feeding on the pre- and post-weaning growth of calves, and on stomach development at weaning

Journal of Agricultural Science, UK 87(2): 357-363

The pre-weaning and post-weaning gain, carcass production and stomach development of calves fed on whole milk at 8%, 10%, 12% and 14% of liveweight daily were studied in 2 experiments. Calves had access to pasture at all times and were weaned at 12 weeks. Pre-weaning gain, weaning liveweight and carcass weight at weaning all increased as the quantity of milk increased. At the highest intake male calves reached heavier weaning liveweights and produced heavier carcasses than females.
