1. Previous studies of the energy requirements of sows during pregnancy have assumed that a positive energy balance is maintained until parturition and feed supplies based on these criteria have resulted in a progressive gain in liveweight with every pregnancy. Since this represents inefficient use of energy for production of piglets an alternative system has been devised limiting the liveweight of the sow to the range 160-180 kg.
