The influence of endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentration on ovary development in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunberg) Matsumura and Nakai cv. Allsweet) and an evaluation of nine male-sterile watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunberg) Matsumura and Nakai) lines with respect to nine fruit characters

Dissertation Abstracts International, B 35(8): 3694B

Nine male-sterile lines were crossed with each of the cultivars Allsweet, Crimson Sweet and Petite Sweet and the F1, F2 and back-cross progeny evaluated for nine characters over four years. Combinations with Allsweet resulted in greater improvement in fruit quality than those with Crimson Sweet or Petite Sweet. All fruit characters except texture were improved significantly in Allsweet combination, with weight, rind toughness and soluble solids showing the greatest improvement.
