The effect of surface roughness of young and mature leaves of 8 species, including sugar beet, sunflower, barley and Sinapis alba on the retention and spreading of oil drops was studied by scanning electron microscopy. 3 types of roughness have been recognized. Leaf hairs and protruding or recessed veins underlying the cuticle constitute a macroscopic roughness.
